Supernatural: Guardian Angel

Summary: Castiel wants to avert the apocalypse, but to do so he must resurrect Sam from the dead before Dean makes the deal with the demon that seals the fate of the world. Can he do this in time? Or will his attempts to save Sam prove futile?

**Starts off during second season**

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you, Sam."

Sam didn't say anything. He just stared ahead of him.

Castiel fidgeted nervously. "Listen, we've been friends since –"

"Friends?" Sam cut him off, voice cold. "You've been lying to me this whole time about who you are – what you are! How could I ever trust you again?"

Castiel flinched, but Sam continued. "You have the nerve to befriend me without telling me you're an angel! An angel!"

Sam shook his head and paced around the room angrily. Castiel stood rigid, unsure of what to do. What to say. What could he say? He failed Sam.

After a moment of silence, Castiel spoke. "I thought you would accept me for who I am."
Sam stopped pacing and stood still, glaring at the ground. "Cas…why didn't you tell me before?"

"I'm…sorry…"

"No, you've got to do better than that. You owe me that!" Sam shouted.

"I know, I know! I should have told you, I just…" he trailed off again. "I'm trying to answer your prayers, Sam."

Sam stared at him. "What prayers?"

Castiel wasn't thrown off. "I'm an angel, you've prayed to all of the angels. I've heard your whispered prayers. Every night. You pray for your brother's safety and happiness…" he looked at the ground awkwardly. "None of my brethren will listen to you. You won't understand why yet…but I did, Sam! I knew there was something different about you. Even after everything you've been through, you still had faith. And that, Sam, is the reason I appeared to you when I did."

"You still could have told me," Sam replied stubbornly.

"Would you have believed me?" Castiel asked him very seriously. Sam looked up from the ground to stare into his eyes, trying to find a suitable answer.

"Sam, you would have hunted me. I needed to wait for the right time…"

"You call my Dad getting killed the 'right time'? Where were you when I needed you during all of those hunts where one of us got hurt? You can heal people, Cas! HEAL! And you let us suffer, let my brother get ripped apart from the inside out, let my dad go to hell…you could have stopped all of this!"

If Sam hadn't been so frustrated, he would have been crying. Castiel knew this. He'd been watching over Sam his whole life, even before Sam knew him. Dean didn't know who Castiel was under Castiel's begging for Sam not to tell him or his father.

Besides, Dean Winchester's role in his life has yet to come. In fact, the whole reason Castiel had come to Sam the week after his girlfriend died was because he couldn't stand by and watch as the Winchester's turned the world upside down. He didn't know where, and he didn't know how, but somehow Sam Winchester dies. That's when Dean sells his soul.

That's when it all goes wrong. Castiel came down to Sam to stop it. He knew he couldn't appear to Dean, not yet. The time wasn't right.

"Sam…"

"What?" Sam snapped.

"Forgive me."

There was silence. That was what killed Castiel. His heart clenching, hoping that he hadn't lost his only friend, Castiel flew away.

Sam was alone. He had seen the hurt flash in Castiel's eyes when he didn't forgive him right away, but honestly, how could he? After all that he and his family had been through, and Castiel just stood by idle and watched it all happen? His dad had died not even a year ago! Castiel could have stopped it. He was an angel. He was supposed to be righteous. He was supposed to be forgiving. He was supposed to save people who deserved to be saved…

With the thought of his dad's death in mind, Sam actually did start crying. He had never felt so alone. His brother was isolating himself from Sam, his father was dead, his best friend had just left.

What was it about Sam that made destiny seem to hate him?
Summary is in the description. I do not own Supernatural. I mean no offense by this.
Might be a friendship fic, but might turn into something more -erm - Sassy. Not sure yet.
